St. Joseph's Pasta
Saint Joseph's Day, celebrated annually on March 19th, is a solemnity in the Catholic Church honoring Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and husband of Mary. Often falling during Lent, it is marked by special masses, festive food, and, in many traditions, wearing red. It is particularly significant in Sicilian and Italian culture, often featuring "St. Joseph's Tables" to honor the saint. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Aspects of Saint Joseph's Day:
- Significance: It honors St. Joseph's role as a protector of the Holy Family, a humble worker, and a righteous man.
- Date: March 19th is the traditional date. In some cases, such as in 2026, it falls on this day.
- Italian Tradition: It is known in Italy as La Festa di San Giuseppe, which is also celebrated as Father's Day, featuring special pastries called zeppole.
- St. Joseph’s Table: A tradition of setting up elaborate altars with food and offering meals to the community or the needy, originating from a Sicilian promise to thank the saint for ending a drought.
- Symbolism: People often wear red, similar to the green worn on St. Patrick's Day.
- Patron Saint: Joseph is the patron of workers, fathers, families, and a happy death. [2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
From The Vault- BBB
BBBv.11
Of all the crazy things we've done in the past, including Tough Mudders, Savage, and Barbarian Races, the Burpee Mile, Tire Flip 400, the Winter Circus, and more 'Murphs' than can be counted- the Beer, Burgers, and Burpees workout might be the craziest. It's that time of year and we've been getting a few questions about whether or not we'll be doing it again.
From it's innocuous start in 2009, it has morphed into one bad WOD. Let's examine the workout:
Beer and Burpees
For time:
100 Burpees
drink 2 beers
drink 2 beers
75 Burpees
drink 2 beers,
50 Burpees
drink 2 beers
25 Burpees
drink 2 beers
While body weight plays a very big role in caloric expenditure, the average athlete will burn 10 calories per minute while performing good form, quality Burpees.
Initially, only beer was to be consumed between rounds. The average caloric content of 12 ounces of beer is 150 calories. As prescribed, that would be 8 beers. You do the math.
We added burgers in 2010 because a few people didn't drink beer. Like the beer, two burgers between rounds. The average caloric content of a burger is 330 calories. Without the bun brings it down to 193 calories. Again, as prescribed would be 8 burgers. You do the math.
BBBv.2
For time:
100 Burpees
drink 2 beers, eat 2 burgers
75 Burpees
drink 2 beers, eat 2 burgers
50 Burpees
drink 2 beers, eat 2 burgers
25 Burpees
drink 2 beers, eat 2 burgers
25 Burpees
drink 2 beers, eat 2 burgers
So, if this workout is done AS PRESCRIBED, and you didn't do the math, the total caloric consumption for this workout could be as much as 3,840. That's almost double the RDA for calories. Minus 'x' for calories burned, that's still a lot of calories.
Is this really a wise choice?
Only a few people have gotten this beast as prescribed and paid the price. Is it worth it? Is the show worth the cost of the ticket? Ask these folks and they'll say, "HELL NO. NEVER AGAIN."
Some of our best work has been a result of poor judgment. A kind of a "best bad decision" thing that in a sick way contributes to the DMBM mentality we love at CFSF.
Be careful what you ask for. You might just get it. That means it's TOYOTA TIME.
So, the answer is a resounding YES! You sick people have chosen to do it again.
BBBv.11 will be held Saturday, March 16 at noon. Sign up sheet on the table.
Only the Burpees are mandatory.
Anything worth doing is worth over-doing.
Anything worth doing is worth over-doing.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia
Fear of Friday the 13th, known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, is a common, widespread superstition affecting 17–21 million Americans, with some avoiding travel or major decisions. It stems from ancient religious, mythological, and historical, cultural associations with the number 13 as unlucky. This fear, sometimes called friggatriskaidekaphobia, is linked to triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Aspects of the Fear:
- Definition: Paraskevidekatriaphobia (pronounced par-uh-skeev-ee-dek-uh-truh-foh-bee-uh).
- Impact: Estimated to cost the U.S. economy up to $\$900$ million per occurrence due to reduced business, travel, and commerce.
- Origins: The combination of Friday (long considered an unlucky day) and the number 13 (often associated with the 13 guests at the Last Supper) created this superstition.
- Symptoms: Anxiety, nervousness, and behavioral changes like avoiding flights, delaying weddings, or canceling important appointments.
- Management: Cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, and mindfulness techniques can help manage the anxiety. [2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

Half A Teaspoon Per Day Shocked Scientists! Fights Inflammation & Rivaled Antibiotics!
Nigella sativa (also known as black seed, black cumin, or kalonji) is an annual flowering plant native to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Western Asia. Its small, black, aromatic seeds are used as a spice in cuisine and in traditional medicine to treat conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and digestive issues. The plant contains high levels of the active compound thymoquinone, providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Key Details About Nigella Sativa:
- Common Names: Black seed, black cumin (often confused with Bunium bulbocastanum), black caraway, Roman coriander, and Kalonji.
- Active Compound: Thymoquinone is the primary bioactive component, often credited for its medicinal properties.
- Health Benefits & Uses: Studies suggest it may help with:
- Weight Loss: Daily consumption of around a quarter teaspoon of powder may reduce weight.
- Cholesterol & Blood Pressure: It has been shown to improve cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure levels.
- Respiratory & Skin Issues: Used for asthma, coughs, eczema, and psoriasis.
- Immune System: It may boost the immune system and reduce inflammation.
- Side Effects: While generally safe, it may cause a loss of appetite and, rarely, allergic reactions.
- Forms: Available as whole seeds, ground powder, and oil. [2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13]
Nigella sativa has been used for centuries, with historical mentions in the Old Testament and traditional medicine systems, often referred to as a "miracle herb". [5, 7, 8]

Chaotic heart of the Milky Way spied by ALMA Array
ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is a transformative international astronomy facility that provides NASA and the global scientific community with unprecedented, high-resolution, and sensitive views of the "cold universe". As a cornerstone of modern, multi-wavelength astronomy, ALMA allows NASA to study the earliest, most distant galaxies, directly observe the birth of planets, and detect the complex chemistry necessary for life. [1, 2, 3, 4]
For NASA, ALMA serves as a critical, ground-based partner to its space telescopes (like Hubble and JWST), providing a more complete picture of cosmic evolution. [1, 5]
Key Significances for NASA
- Unveiling Planet Formation: ALMA produces high-resolution images of protoplanetary disks (e.g., HL Tau), allowing NASA researchers to see planets actively forming within dusty disks, transforming previously accepted theories about the process.
- Complementing Space Telescopes: While Hubble and JWST observe in visible and infrared light, ALMA detects cold, dark gas and dust, providing a complementary "view". For example, ALMA works alongside Hubble to study galaxies in the "Hubble Ultra-Deep Field" and together with JWST to study massive stars.
- Unmasking the Early Universe: ALMA’s high sensitivity allows it to peer into the "cosmic dark ages," observing the first galaxies and stars that formed billions of years ago.
- Detecting Prebiotic Molecules: ALMA can detect organic materials—the building blocks of life—in distant star-forming regions, helping NASA investigate the potential for life elsewhere in the universe.
- Key Asset for Multi-Messenger Astronomy: ALMA was critical to the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, helping to produce the first-ever image of a black hole. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Partnership and Technology
ALMA is not just a tool, but a major collaborative, international project.
- Partnership: It is a partnership between the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan.
- The Array: Located in Chile's Atacama Desert at 5,000 meters altitude, it consists of 66 high-precision antennas.
- Resolution: By combining signals from these antennas, ALMA functions as a single telescope with a resolution up to 10 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. [2, 3, 11, 12]
In essence, ALMA provides the "soul" (or "heart" in Spanish, as alma means soul) of cosmic origins research for NASA by focusing on the cold materials that define the early stages of stars and planets. [2, 13]
