A Top Gun pilot once told me carrier landings were the scariest thing he'd ever
done. Even with hundreds of landings, each one was as terrifying as the first.
The most frightening of all? Night time landings. At night the deck looks
like a little illuminated postage stamp in a literal sea of black, pitching
up and down with the wave action of the ocean, which could be 20+ feet.
