26 July 1944: U.S. Marines take Ushi Point Airfield on Tinian island in the Marianas. The U.S. built North Field Airfield there, which was the largest airport in the world at the time. It was where the B-29's took off and delivered the atomic bomb to Japan, also leading to the infamous USS Indianapolis disaster.
